The Poet’s Voice
Directed by The New Eden Consort
About the course
How can poetry come alive through music? In this imaginative vocal ensemble course, The New Eden Consort explores the relationship between words and sound, discovering how composers interpret poetry and how a deeper understanding of text can transform performance. Drawing on Shakespeare, British folksong and sacred liturgy, participants will explore music by composers including Vaughan Williams, Bruckner and Imogen Holst, and consider how music can reinforce, reshape or even challenge the meaning of the words.
Who is it for?
This Open Level course is for singers who enjoy exploring choral music in depth and want to develop their expressive and interpretative skills. Whether you usually sing in a choir or as a soloist, you should be comfortable singing choral repertoire and reading music. No specialist knowledge of poetry is needed: curiosity, imagination and a willingness to experiment are what matter most.
What to expect
Across six 75-minute sessions, participants will work on two pieces each day, using discussion, attentive listening and practical singing to investigate how imagery, meaning and emotion influence phrasing, dynamics, articulation, tempo and vocal colour. Different interpretations will be welcomed, with opportunities to share ideas and discover how small musical choices can change the way a text communicates. Music booklets and choral practice tracks will be provided in advance, and singers are encouraged to learn their parts before arriving so that sessions can focus on interpretation. The week will conclude with an informal performance of the music explored together.
