Wind Band
Exploring the Classics and New Horizons of Wind Band Music
Directed by Steve Dummer
About the course
Experience the excitement, energy and extraordinary range of colours of a full wind band under the direction of Steve Dummer. Bringing together woodwind, brass and percussion players, this lively and rewarding course will explore a varied programme of classic and contemporary wind band repertoire, from richly expressive melodies and exhilarating rhythms to bold, imaginative soundscapes. Whether you enjoy the great traditions of wind band music or are keen to discover something new, this is an opportunity to develop your ensemble playing, explore contrasting musical styles and enjoy the thrill of making music as part of a vibrant group.
Who is it for?
This course welcomes woodwind, brass and percussion players with some previous experience of ensemble playing. Participants should be comfortable reading music and following a conductor, and willing to tackle a varied and sometimes challenging programme. The emphasis is on enthusiastic participation, shared musical discovery and the enjoyment of playing together in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
What to expect
Throughout the week, Steve will guide the band through a mixture of established favourites and more contemporary works, exploring the distinctive sounds, textures and expressive possibilities of the wind band. Rehearsals will focus on ensemble precision, rhythmic confidence, balance, articulation and musical interpretation, while providing opportunities to discover unfamiliar repertoire and develop listening skills. The programme will be confirmed nearer the time, taking account of the instrumental forces available, with opportunities to share the results of the week’s music-making.
