West African Drumming
Directed by Ensemble Bash
About the course
Discover the vibrant rhythms and sounds of West Africa in this lively, hands-on course led by Ensemble Bash. Drawing on music learned directly from master drummers during the ensemble’s many visits to Ghana, participants will explore a rich variety of drumming and percussion traditions, experiencing the energy and enjoyment of making music together.
Who is it for?
This is an Open Access course for all ages, with no previous musical or drumming experience required. All instruments will be provided: simply bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to join in.
What to expect
Across the week, Ensemble Bash will introduce participants to harvest rhythms from the Dagomba region, played on expressive squeeze-drum dondos and resonant bass drums; war drumming and bell music from the Ewe region; and the sweet, buzzing melodies of the Gyil, a traditional balafon. The course will also explore celebratory Kumpo rhythms played on Senegalese djembes and dun-duns.
Through practical group music-making, participants will learn to listen, respond and play together, discovering how interlocking rhythms and contrasting instrumental sounds create the distinctive character of these traditions. Sessions will be welcoming, energetic and enjoyable, with plenty of opportunities to try different instruments and experience the excitement of ensemble drumming.
