Who is it for?

This course is designed for intermediate and advanced viol players with some previous experience of consort playing. Participants should be comfortable reading music, holding an independent part and working collaboratively within a small ensemble. Players with different levels of experience are welcome, with groups formed wherever possible to provide a rewarding and appropriately challenging musical experience.

What to expect

Participants will explore Renaissance and early Baroque consort repertoire, developing their approach to tuning, blend, balance, articulation, phrasing and stylistic interpretation. Sessions will combine focused ensemble rehearsal with practical coaching, encouraging players to listen closely, respond sensitively and develop a shared musical understanding. Particular attention will be given to the interplay between individual voices and the expressive possibilities of historical instruments. The week will culminate in an informal performance opportunity, giving participants the chance to share some of the music they have explored together in a relaxed and supportive setting.
