Viennese Orchestra
Waltzes, Polkas and the Spirit of Vienna
Directed by Steve Dummer
About the course
Step into the elegant and exuberant world of Viennese dance music with Steve Dummer. Building on the joyful spirit of the Light Orchestra course, this new ensemble will explore the lilting waltzes, sparkling polkas and other dances that have made Vienna synonymous with musical celebration. Participants will discover how rhythm, phrasing and orchestral colour bring this repertoire to life, enjoying the pleasure of playing together while preparing music for a very special occasion: the Summer School’s Friday evening Viennese Ball.
Who is it for?
This Open Level course welcomes players of orchestral instruments, including percussion and saxophones, with a range of experience. Participants should be comfortable reading music and playing as part of an ensemble. Parts will be selected and allocated with the group in mind, and enthusiasm for lively, collaborative music-making is more important than previous experience of Viennese repertoire.
What to expect
Daily rehearsals will focus on ensemble listening, the distinctive lift and flow of the Viennese waltz, crisp articulation in polkas, and the contrasts of pace and character that make dance music so engaging. Steve will guide the orchestra in shaping a varied programme, with repertoire and parts chosen to suit the players taking part. The week culminates on Friday evening when the Viennese Orchestra will perform live for the Viennese Ball party, providing a festive finale to the course.
