To Stand Up and Sing – Vocal Workshop
directed by Kate Semmens
About the course
Join soprano Kate Semmens for a welcoming and supportive vocal workshop designed to help singers develop confidence, freedom and individuality in performance. Through individual coaching and shared musical exploration, participants will discover how vocal technique can support expression, communication and the enjoyment of singing. Working with songs and arias chosen by participants, Kate will offer practical guidance on developing the voice, exploring interpretation and finding greater ease and assurance in performance.
Who is it for?
This Open Access course welcomes enthusiastic singers of all abilities, from those developing their vocal skills to experienced performers wishing to refine their technique and interpretation. No audition is required. Participants should bring at least one song or aria that they know well and feel comfortable singing. The friendly masterclass environment provides an opportunity to explore new ideas, build confidence and develop greater freedom in singing.
What to expect
Sessions will take the form of informal masterclasses, with each participant receiving individual coaching from Kate in front of the group. Work may explore vocal technique, phrasing, interpretation, expression and communicating text and musical character. Listening to fellow participants is an important part of the experience, as is learning to collaborate positively with accompanists. At the end of the week, each participant will have the opportunity to present a chosen song or aria in an informal performance for the group, putting into practice the ideas explored during the course.
