The Art of the Cello
Exploring Repertoire, Technique and Musical Expression
Directed by Gemma Rosefield
About the course
Spend a week exploring the cello with acclaimed cellist Gemma Rosefield, combining individual guidance with the pleasure of making music alongside fellow cellists. Whether you are refining a favourite work, developing your technique or discovering new approaches to musical expression, this course offers a stimulating and collaborative environment in which to develop your playing. Through solo playing, duos and group music-making, participants will explore the cello’s remarkable expressive range, sharing ideas, tackling musical challenges and discovering fresh perspectives on familiar repertoire.
We will also explore practice techniques and how to make the most of the practice time you have.
Who is it for?
This course welcomes intermediate and advanced cellists who would like to develop their playing in a friendly, collaborative environment. It is particularly suited to enthusiastic amateur musicians who enjoy learning alongside others, whether exploring solo repertoire or making music together. There is no need to arrive with a polished performance: works in progress are welcome, and the emphasis is on individual development, musical curiosity and shared discovery.
Beginners are also welcome to join the class and can gain a lot from listening and shorter playing sessions.
What to expect
Sessions will bring together individual guidance, duo playing and group activities, responding to the music and interests participants bring. There will be opportunities to explore phrasing, sound, technique and interpretation through practical music-making, and to learn from hearing other cellists at work. Any repertoire is welcome. Please bring your cello and music you would enjoy working on; pieces in progress are just as welcome as familiar favourites.
