String Ensemble
Directed by the string players of Ensemble 360
About the course
Enjoy the rich sound and shared energy of string ensemble playing in this inspiring course directed by Benjamin Nabarro, Claudia Ajmone-Marsan, Rachel Roberts and Gemma Rosefield of Ensemble 360. Working together on two contrasting British masterpieces, participants will explore the expressive sweep of Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro and the drama and atmosphere of Walton’s Two Pieces for Strings from Henry V. The course offers a rewarding opportunity to develop ensemble technique, deepen musical understanding and experience the pleasure of creating a unified sound with fellow string players.
Who is it for?
This Open Access course welcomes enthusiastic violinists, violists, cellists and double bass players who enjoy playing with others. Players should be able to read music and follow an ensemble part, but the course is designed to accommodate a range of experience and confidence. Whether you regularly play in an orchestra or are keen to broaden your chamber-orchestral experience, you will find a supportive environment in which to contribute and develop.
What to expect
Across the week, the Ensemble 360 tutors will guide rehearsals of Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro and Walton’s Two Pieces for Strings from Henry V. Sessions will explore the interplay between sections, listening and balance, rhythmic precision, articulation, phrasing and the expressive possibilities of string tone. Elgar’s writing offers opportunities to explore both intimate chamber-music dialogue and full ensemble sonority, while Walton’s theatrical music invites vivid character and colour. The emphasis will be on collaborative music-making, practical coaching and the enjoyment of bringing these works to life together.
