Renaissance Ensemble – The Golden Age

Directed by The City Musick

About the course

The late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries witnessed an extraordinary flowering of music and culture across Europe. This course explores the rich variety of instrumental and vocal music created in England, Spain, Italy and the German territories during this remarkable period. In Session 2, participants will discover the distinctive colours, forms and traditions of Renaissance instrumental music, from intimate consort repertoire to music conceived on a grander scale. Session 3 brings singers and instrumentalists together to explore substantial works in which voices and instruments combine. Moving between countries and musical traditions, the course will reveal both the striking contrasts and the lively exchange of ideas that made this era a true golden age.

Who is it for?

Suitable for confident instrumentalists and singers who are capable sight-readers and comfortable holding an independent part. No formal grade is required, but participants should have secure technique and good ensemble awareness. Instrumentalists may take Session 2, Session 3 or both; singers join the course in Session 3.

What to expect

Session 2 will focus on instrumental repertoire, exploring style, articulation, balance and the character of different national traditions through ensemble rehearsal and coaching. In Session 3, the group will expand to include singers and work on larger-scale music for voices and instruments. Repertoire will develop across the week, allowing participants to become increasingly confident in the sound world and performance conventions of the period. Those attending both sessions will experience the progression from instrumental consort playing to the richer textures of combined vocal and instrumental music, leading towards an informal end-of-week performance.
