Jam Band
Directed by Steve Dummer
About the course
Join the party band! Led by Steve Dummer, Jam Band is a lively and inclusive ensemble bringing together musicians of all kinds to enjoy the excitement of playing together. Exploring jazz and big band standards, familiar classics and opportunities for jamming and improvisation, the course is all about making music, having fun and creating a great sound together. Throughout the week, participants will prepare to provide the live music for the Summer School’s Friday night party, bringing the week to a close with an evening of music and dancing.
Who is it for?
Jam Band is open to instrumentalists of all levels and musical backgrounds. Whether you regularly play jazz, enjoy popular music or are trying this style for the first time, everyone is welcome. No previous jazz or improvisation experience is required. Some ability to read music and play alongside others will be helpful, and Steve will encourage everyone to contribute according to their experience and confidence.
What to expect
Daily rehearsals will explore an entertaining mixture of jazz standards, big band favourites and familiar classics, building a programme for the Friday night party. Steve will guide the ensemble through arrangements, working on rhythm, groove, phrasing and interaction between instrumental sections. There will be opportunities to jam, experiment with musical ideas and improvise, with encouragement for those trying something new. The emphasis is on the shared enjoyment of playing together, culminating in a live performance at the Summer School’s Friday night celebrations.
