Harpsichord – Froberger and the Seventeenth Century

Directed by Jane Chapman

About the course

Explore the rich and varied world of seventeenth-century harpsichord music in this stimulating course directed by Jane Chapman. At its heart is Johann Jakob Froberger, one of the most influential keyboard composers of his generation, whose music bridges the distinctive traditions of Italy, France and Germany. Through Froberger and his contemporaries, participants will discover how musical ideas travelled across Europe and shaped the expressive possibilities of the keyboard.

Who is it for?

This course welcomes harpsichord players with a range of experience, from those developing their skills to accomplished players wishing to deepen their understanding of historical repertoire and performance practice. Participants are encouraged to bring music they are studying, whether related to the central theme or chosen from their own interests, together with any technical or interpretative questions they would like to explore.

What to expect

Under Jane Chapman’s guidance, participants will explore Froberger alongside Frescobaldi, Louis Couperin and Chambonnières, tracing the interplay of Italian, French and German styles. Works by J. S. Bach, who is reputed to have copied out compositions by Froberger, are also welcome. Sessions will consider technique, articulation, ornamentation, phrasing and stylistic interpretation, with room for participants’ own repertoire choices. Practical coaching and shared discussion will encourage confidence, curiosity and expressive freedom.
