Folk Songwriting
Directed by Adam Clark and Nic Zuppardi
About the course
Discover the art and craft of folk songwriting with Adam Clark and Nic Zuppardi. From the first spark of an idea to a finished song, this creative and practical course explores how words and music come together to tell stories, express emotions and connect with listeners. Drawing inspiration from the rich heritage of folk music and examples of accomplished songwriters, participants will explore ways of finding subjects, shaping lyrics, developing melodies and experimenting with song structures. Through guided exercises, discussion and constructive feedback, you will be encouraged to develop your own distinctive voice while discovering new approaches to writing. Whether you arrive with a notebook full of ideas or have never written a song before, this is an opportunity to combine tradition with personal creativity and make something new.
Who is it for?
Open to anyone with an interest in folk music and songwriting, from complete beginners to experienced writers wishing to refresh or develop their approach. You do not need to have written songs before, and the emphasis will be on curiosity, creativity and a willingness to try out ideas. Singers and instrumentalists are equally welcome.
What to expect
Each day will combine listening, discussion and practical songwriting exercises, exploring different stages of the creative process: generating ideas, finding lyrical imagery, developing melodic material, building a song and refining a draft. Adam and Nic will draw on examples from folk traditions and established songwriters while encouraging participants to experiment with their own styles and structures. There will be opportunities to work independently, exchange ideas and share songs or works in progress in a friendly, supportive environment. The aim is to leave with new techniques, greater confidence and original material to continue developing.
