About the course

Discover the pleasure of singing folk songs together with Adam Clark and Nic Zuppardi. Drawing on communal singing traditions from the British Isles, America and Europe, this course explores the rich variety of ways in which folk songs are shared, learned and brought to life. From shape note singing and rounds to learning by ear and building harmonies using simple systems, participants will experience different approaches to singing as a group. Alongside the music-making, Adam and Nic will introduce the cultural contexts in which these traditions have developed, offering fresh perspectives on the stories and communities behind the songs.

Who is it for?

Open to all voices and all levels of experience, from those new to group singing to confident and experienced singers. You do not need to read music or have previous experience of folk singing. Curiosity, an enjoyment of singing and a willingness to join in are all that is required.

What to expect

Each daily session will combine practical group singing with opportunities to discover repertoire from different folk traditions. Adam and Nic will introduce songs through a mixture of learning by ear, rounds, shape note singing and accessible approaches to harmony. Participants will explore how songs can be shaped collectively, listening to one another and discovering the distinctive character of each tradition. The atmosphere will be friendly and collaborative, with an emphasis on participation, shared discovery and the enjoyment of singing together.
