Dissecting Dido
Directed by Kate Semmens
About the course
Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas is one of the great masterpieces of English Baroque opera, full of beautiful melodies, vivid characters and moments of extraordinary emotional intensity. In this imaginative and informal course, Kate Semmens invites singers to explore the work from the inside, discovering its musical and dramatic riches through the experience of singing it themselves.
Who is it for?
This is an Open Access course for singers of all levels of experience. No previous experience of opera or of singing Purcell is required. Participants can choose the arias, duets or passages that interest them, without formal casting or the expectation of learning a complete role. There can be plenty of Didos, Belindas, Witches, Aeneas’ and Sailors!
What to expect
Building on the welcoming and supportive approach of Kate’s To Stand Up and Sing course, daily sessions will focus on individual voices. Kate will work with participants on vocal technique, interpretation, characterisation and dramatic expression, helping each singer develop confidence and understanding of Purcell’s music.
As the week progresses, singers may bring their contributions together into short scenes, exploring the interaction between characters and the drama of the opera. The course may culminate in an informal sharing of selected scenes and musical moments. Participants are welcome to bring music they would particularly like to explore; the direction of the week will grow from their interests.
