Choir Notes & Confidence Workshop

Directed by Gavin Roberts

About the course

Join pianist and conductor Gavin Roberts for a friendly and supportive workshop designed to help singers develop confidence in the music being explored by the Summer School Choir. This year, the workshop will focus on Handel’s magnificent oratorio Solomon, offering an opportunity to become more familiar with the notes, rhythms and musical challenges of this richly rewarding choral work. Through practical note-learning, focused work on individual voice parts and an exploration of Handel’s distinctive musical language, Gavin will help participants build the confidence and assurance needed to enjoy singing in the larger choir. The workshop provides a relaxed environment in which to ask questions, consolidate learning and develop greater musical independence.

Who is it for?

This workshop is open to all singers taking part in the Summer School Choir, particularly those who would welcome additional support with learning the music. Whether you are an experienced choral singer wanting to strengthen your familiarity with the score or someone who finds learning new repertoire a little daunting, the sessions will provide encouragement and practical guidance. No audition is required, and singers of all levels are welcome.

What to expect

Each day, Gavin will work through selected passages from Handel’s Solomon, concentrating on secure note-learning, rhythmic accuracy, part-singing and musical details that can be difficult to address in a full choir rehearsal. The sessions will respond to participants’ needs, allowing time to revisit challenging passages, strengthen listening skills and develop confidence in singing independently within an ensemble. Particular attention will be given to Handel’s rhythmic vitality, contrapuntal writing and clear articulation. The emphasis throughout will be on making the music more accessible and enjoyable, helping everyone feel better prepared for the main choir rehearsals and the end-of-week performance.
