Choir – Holst’s ‘The Cloud Messenger’
Sat 7th Aug to Sat 14th Aug
SS27
Holst’s The Cloud Messenger and Parry Anthems
Directed by Joseph Fort
About the course
Join Joseph Fort for a week exploring three remarkable works of British choral music. At its heart is Gustav Holst’s The Cloud Messenger, a rarely performed masterpiece inspired by an ancient Sanskrit poem. An exiled spirit entrusts a passing cloud with a message of love for his distant wife in the Himalayas. Completed in 1910, the work combines richly coloured harmonies and extraordinary atmosphere, anticipating aspects of The Planets. The choir will perform Joseph Fort’s own chamber-orchestra version, bringing fresh intimacy and clarity to this evocative score. Alongside Holst, singers will explore two of Hubert Parry’s stirring ceremonial works, I was glad and Blest Pair of Sirens.
Who is it for?
This Open Access course welcomes singers of all levels, from experienced choral performers to those wishing to develop their confidence. No audition is required. Some ability to read music will be helpful, particularly given the scale and variety of the repertoire, and advance preparation is strongly recommended. Enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to sing as part of a choir are essential.
What to expect
Daily rehearsals with Joseph Fort will explore the expressive range of Holst’s The Cloud Messenger and the thrilling choral writing of Parry. Singers will work on ensemble, vocal colour, phrasing and rhythm, discovering the distinctive musical language of each composer. Particular attention will be given to the atmosphere and storytelling of Holst’s score, alongside the breadth and brilliance of Parry’s anthems. Rehearsals will build towards an end-of-week performance with orchestra,
