Handel’s Solomon

Directed by Andrew Griffiths

About the course

Join Andrew Griffiths for a week exploring one of Handel’s most richly scored and rewarding oratorios, Solomon. Combining magnificent ceremonial choruses with music of great tenderness and dramatic intensity, the work offers a remarkable range of musical expression, from the celebrated Arrival of the Queen of Sheba to the powerful choruses surrounding the judgement of Solomon. Written in 1748, Solomon is a particularly rewarding work for choral singers, with its vibrant contrapuntal writing, contrasting textures and splendid orchestral colours. Throughout the week, participants will explore Handel’s distinctive musical language, developing their understanding of Baroque style, phrasing, articulation and the relationship between text and music. The course will culminate in a performance with soloists and the Summer School’s Baroque Orchestra.

Who is it for?

This course welcomes all singers who enjoy singing in a choir, whether experienced performers or those looking to develop their confidence and skills. No audition is required, and participants of all levels are encouraged to take part. Some ability to read music will be helpful, and advance familiarity with the score is recommended, but enthusiasm and a willingness to participate are the most important requirements.

What to expect

Daily rehearsals will explore the choral movements of Solomon, developing ensemble singing, vocal expression and an understanding of Handel’s style. Andrew will guide the choir through the music, working on rhythmic vitality, articulation, phrasing and the dramatic character of the choruses. Rehearsals will build towards a performance with professional soloists and the Summer School’s Baroque Orchestra. The course offers an opportunity to experience the excitement of preparing a substantial choral work in a supportive environment, singing alongside others who share a love of music.
