Chamber Music

Week 2 · Sessions 1, 2, 3 & 4, co-ordinated by Rhiannan Evans

About the course

Discover the pleasures of chamber music in this welcoming and flexible course, offering instrumentalists the opportunity to explore repertoire, develop ensemble skills and enjoy making music together in small groups. Chamber music brings players together to share ideas, listen closely and develop a collective interpretation. Whether you are discovering chamber music for the first time or have years of experience, the course provides a supportive environment in which to explore familiar works, discover new repertoire and deepen your enjoyment of playing with others.

Who is it for?

This Open Level course welcomes instrumentalists of varying abilities and experience who enjoy playing in small ensembles. Participants should be comfortable reading music and preparing their own parts, and be willing to collaborate with fellow musicians. Both established chamber groups and individual players are welcome. Individual applicants will be placed in ensembles wherever possible, taking account of instrumentation, playing experience and musical interests.

What to expect

Chamber Music runs throughout all four daily sessions, allowing participants to build a programme that suits their interests and commitments. Sessions will offer opportunities for ensemble rehearsal, musical exploration and collaborative learning, with an emphasis on listening, communication, balance, phrasing and interpretation. Participants will work on repertoire suited to their groups, developing their understanding through shared rehearsal and discussion. There will also be opportunities to share music informally with fellow participants towards the end of the week. The flexible format allows participants to enjoy chamber music alongside other Summer School activities, or to concentrate on ensemble playing throughout the day. Coaching is provided in Sessions 2, 3 & 4 whilst Session 1 is uncoached.
