Brass Ensembles
Directed by Paul Archibald
About the course
Enjoy the distinctive sound, energy and versatility of brass ensemble playing in this welcoming course directed by Paul Archibald. Bringing together brass players to explore music in a variety of styles, the course offers an opportunity to develop ensemble technique, broaden musical horizons and discover the particular rewards of making music in a smaller group. Through collaborative rehearsal and expert guidance, participants will work towards greater confidence, musical understanding and expressive performance.
Who is it for?
This Open Level course welcomes brass players with a wide range of experience, from developing musicians to accomplished ensemble players. Trumpet, cornet, horn, trombone, euphonium and tuba players are encouraged to take part. Participants should be comfortable reading music and playing their own part within an ensemble. Enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to listen and collaborate are the most important requirements.
What to expect
Across the week, Paul Archibald will guide participants through ensemble rehearsals and practical coaching, focusing on tuning, blend, balance, articulation, phrasing and rhythmic precision. Players will explore how to communicate effectively within a brass group, develop a unified sound and bring character and expression to the music. Repertoire will be selected to suit the instrumentation and experience of those attending, allowing everyone to contribute and progress in a supportive, creative atmosphere.
