About the course

Experience the energy, rhythm and excitement of playing in a full Big Band under the direction of Steve Dummer. Exploring classic swing, jazz standards and some of the great repertoire of the big band tradition, this course offers a wonderful opportunity to make music together in a lively, friendly and supportive environment. Throughout the week, participants will discover what makes a great big band sound, from tightly coordinated ensemble playing to the distinctive character of jazz phrasing and rhythm. The course culminates in an informal end-of-week performance.

Who is it for?

This Open Level course welcomes instrumentalists with a range of musical backgrounds, from established big band players to those exploring the style for the first time. Saxophonists, trumpeters, trombonists and rhythm section musicians are all welcome. Some confidence reading music and playing in an ensemble will be helpful, but previous jazz or big band experience is not essential. Enthusiasm and a willingness to make music together are the most important qualities.

What to expect

Daily rehearsals will explore swing, jazz standards and classic big band arrangements. Steve will guide players in ensemble precision, rhythmic confidence, phrasing, articulation and the balance between instrumental sections. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between the rhythm section and the rest of the band, and to developing the rhythmic drive that brings big band music to life. There will be opportunities to explore improvisation where appropriate, with encouragement for those developing confidence. The week builds towards an informal performance sharing the music explored together.
