Discover the remarkable range and personality of the bassoon in a welcoming week of music-making with Jonathan Davies. From its warm lyrical voice to its playful and dramatic character, the instrument offers a wealth of possibilities to explore. Through individual coaching, practical demonstrations and shared discussion, participants will develop their confidence, refine their technique and find fresh ways to communicate through music. Whether revisiting a favourite piece or tackling something new, the course offers an encouraging space to experiment and learn from fellow bassoonists.

Who is it for?

This Open Level course welcomes bassoonists with a range of experience, from developing amateur players to confident and experienced musicians. Participants should be able to read music and bring a piece or passage they would like to explore. There is no obligation to perform solo repertoire in front of the group: the emphasis is on enjoying the instrument, sharing ideas and making progress at your own pace.

What to expect

Sessions will explore tone production, breathing, articulation, phrasing and the practical challenges of bassoon playing, with guidance tailored to individual interests. Participants are invited to bring solo works, studies, orchestral excerpts or passages they would like help with. There will be opportunities to listen, discuss interpretation and consider approaches to effective practice, including reed-related questions where appropriate. Informal ensemble playing may also be possible, depending on the group. The precise balance of activities will reflect participants’ experience and interests.
