Exploring Sound, Technique and Musical Connection

Directed by Naomi Atherton

About the course

There is something special about the sound of horns playing together. Join Naomi Atherton for a week celebrating the rich, expressive world of the French horn, combining the enjoyment of horn ensemble playing with individual coaching, practical advice and opportunities to develop your confidence as a player. From warm, lyrical melodies to the excitement of ensemble music-making, participants will explore the instrument’s remarkable versatility in a friendly and encouraging atmosphere. Whether you have a particular musical challenge to tackle or simply want to discover new possibilities, this course offers the chance to develop your playing while sharing your enthusiasm for the horn with others.

Who is it for?

This Open Level course welcomes horn players with a broad range of experience who enjoy making music with others. You do not need to be an advanced player, but should be comfortable reading music and willing to participate in ensemble playing. Activities and repertoire will be adapted to the experience of the group, allowing everyone to contribute and develop at their own level.

What to expect

The week will include horn ensemble playing, opportunities to share solo repertoire and receive individual coaching, and informal conversations about technique, breathing and musical interpretation. Participants can bring questions or passages they find difficult, with time to explore practical approaches to problem-solving and effective practice. Listening to and playing alongside others will be an important part of the experience, in a supportive atmosphere where enjoyment and musical development go hand in hand.
