An Introduction to Improvisation
Directed by Steve Dummer
About the course
Discover the freedom and excitement of making music in the moment with Steve Dummer. This friendly, practical course offers an introduction to the building blocks of musical improvisation, helping participants explore new ideas, develop their confidence and enjoy the creative possibilities of playing without a fully written score. Through simple exercises, listening and shared music-making, you will discover how rhythm, melody and musical conversation can become starting points for invention. There is no need to have improvised before: curiosity and a willingness to experiment are all that is required.
Who is it for?
This Open Level course welcomes instrumentalists and singers who are curious about improvisation, whether trying it for the first time or looking to develop existing experience. You do not need a background in jazz or any particular style of music. Activities will be adapted to the interests and abilities of the group, with an emphasis on participation, listening and discovering what is possible together.
What to expect
Sessions will use accessible games and practical exercises to explore rhythm, short melodic ideas, call and response, variation and the art of listening and responding to others. Participants will have opportunities to improvise individually, in pairs and as a group, gradually building confidence in shaping musical ideas spontaneously. Steve will encourage experimentation in a supportive atmosphere, where there are no wrong notes and everyone can contribute. The precise activities will respond to the experience and interests of those taking part.
