Advanced Chamber Music – strings and piano

Directed by Benjamin Nabarro, Claudia Ajmone-Marsan, Rachel Roberts, Gemma Rosefield and Philip Nelson

About the course

Explore the art of chamber music at an advanced level in this intensive course coached by Benjamin Nabarro, Claudia Ajmone-Marsan, Rachel Roberts, Gemma Rosefield and Philip Nelson. Working in small ensembles, participants will develop the close listening, musical independence and shared sense of purpose that make chamber music so rewarding. With guidance from experienced professional players, the course offers time to explore repertoire in depth, refine interpretations and enjoy the creative challenge of making music together.

Who is it for?

This course is intended for advanced string and piano players with secure instrumental technique, confident sight-reading and substantial chamber music or ensemble experience. Participants should be comfortable playing one to a part, preparing their music independently and contributing ideas to a collaborative rehearsal. Established groups and individual applicants are welcome; ensemble formation will depend on the available instruments and players.

What to expect

Daily coached sessions will combine focused rehearsal with practical advice on ensemble balance, intonation, articulation, phrasing, communication and interpretation. Players will consider how to shape a shared musical vision while retaining the character and responsibility of each individual part. Repertoire will be selected to suit the groups formed, with opportunities to address technical and musical challenges in detail. Participants should expect to prepare their parts in advance so that the week can concentrate on ensemble development and expressive performance.
