Accordion – Solo and Duo Performance
Directed by Ian Watson
About the course
Develop your accordion playing with Ian Watson in a course devoted to solo and duo repertoire, technical development and musical expression. An internationally experienced performer, composer and teacher, Ian brings a wealth of knowledge from his work with accordionists across Europe and from a performing career encompassing classical music, theatre, film and popular music. This course offers intermediate and advanced players the opportunity to work in detail on repertoire of their own choosing, exploring both the technical and interpretative challenges of accordion performance. Particular attention will be given to the expressive possibilities of the instrument, including the essential role of bellows control in shaping phrasing, dynamics and musical character. Whether preparing for performance or seeking fresh ideas about interpretation, participants will benefit from Ian’s practical and individual approach.
Who is it for?
This course is for intermediate and advanced accordionists (Oberstufe) who are confident solo or duo players and wish to develop their technique and performance skills. Participants should have an established level of instrumental proficiency and be comfortable preparing repertoire for coaching. It is not suitable for beginners or less experienced players.
What to expect
Daily sessions will offer opportunities for solo and duo coaching, with Ian working on music prepared and brought by participants. Teaching will focus on technical development, interpretation and performance practice, especially bellows control, articulation, phrasing and expressive communication. Participants will be encouraged to listen to and learn from one another, experimenting with different approaches to musical challenges in a supportive setting. The course will conclude with an informal end-of-week sharing of work.
