About the course

Join accordionist, composer and conductor Ian Watson for a week of ensemble music-making, exploring the expressive possibilities of the accordion orchestra. Returning to the Summer School programme this year, accordion playing brings a distinctive new dimension to the week in Norfolk. Working primarily with Ian’s own compositions, participants will explore music written specifically for accordion ensemble, gaining first-hand insights into its structure, character and interpretation. Drawing on his extensive experience conducting and coaching accordion orchestras across Europe, Ian will guide players beyond the notes towards a deeper understanding of the music. The course offers experienced accordionists the opportunity to work together intensively, develop their ensemble skills and enjoy the particular rewards of shared music-making.

Who is it for?

This course is designed for intermediate and advanced accordionists (Oberstufe) with experience of orchestral or ensemble playing, or confident solo and duo players who would enjoy working in a larger group. Participants should read music confidently and be able to prepare their parts independently. It is not suitable for beginners or less experienced players.

What to expect

Daily rehearsals will focus on Ian’s original compositions for accordion orchestra, exploring ensemble precision, balance, articulation, phrasing and musical expression. Ian will share insights into his compositional intentions, allowing the group to examine the repertoire in greater depth than is often possible in a shorter workshop. Sessions will emphasise attentive listening and musical communication as the ensemble develops a shared interpretation. The week will conclude with an informal course sharing.
