About the course
Discover the energy, creativity and shared enjoyment of jazz in this welcoming ensemble course. Exploring music from classic swing and bebop to contemporary jazz and groove-based styles, participants will develop their understanding of jazz rhythm, harmony and phrasing while making music together. The emphasis is on listening, responding and finding a collective sound, with opportunities to develop individual expression and improvisation in a supportive setting.
Who is it for?
Open to instrumentalists and vocalists who enjoy making music with others, this course welcomes a broad range of experience, including those new to jazz. You should be comfortable taking part in an ensemble and willing to explore unfamiliar styles. Experienced jazz players will have opportunities to develop their musical ideas, while those newer to improvisation will be encouraged to participate at their own pace. Enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to listen are more important than previous jazz experience.
What to expect
Through daily ensemble rehearsals, participants will work on a selection of jazz pieces, exploring groove, swing feel, ensemble balance, articulation and musical communication. Practical exercises will introduce approaches to improvisation, from simple rhythmic and melodic ideas to more adventurous soloing, without pressure to perform a solo. Repertoire will be chosen to suit the players and singers taking part, with space for creativity and collaborative arrangements. The week will culminate in a relaxed, informal performance celebrating the music developed together.
