The Singing Voice
Directed by Sarah Gabriel
About the course
Bring the songs you love and discover new ways to make them your own in this welcoming, imaginative singing course with Sarah Gabriel. From classical song and jazz standards to musical theatre, music hall and everything in between, the choice of repertoire is yours. Together, you will explore how words, music and storytelling come alive through the voice, finding fresh possibilities in familiar favourites and perhaps discovering something unexpected along the way. With an emphasis on curiosity, encouragement and the pleasure of singing, this is a chance to experiment, grow in confidence and enjoy sharing music with others.
Who is it for?
Open to singers of all levels, styles and backgrounds, whether you are taking your first steps in singing for others or have years of performance experience. Bring your favourite songs, an open mind and a willingness to explore. There is no prescribed repertoire or preferred genre: every voice and musical taste is welcome.
What to expect
Sessions will offer opportunities to sing and to explore your chosen repertoire with Sarah as well as listening and learning from other performances, focusing on the meaning of the words, interpretation, vocal technique and the skills that help a performance communicate. Supportive, practical feedback will help you experiment with phrasing, character, expression and stage presence. Please bring songs lasting around two to three minutes, so there is time both to sing each piece and to work on the ideas that emerge. The atmosphere will be collaborative and encouraging, with plenty to learn from listening to one another as well as from singing.
