Clarinet Connections

Exploring Sound, Ensemble and Musical Confidence

Directed by Robert Plane

About the course

Discover the pleasure of making music with fellow clarinettists under the guidance of acclaimed clarinettist Robert Plane. Combining lively ensemble playing with individual musical exploration, this welcoming course offers opportunities to develop your technique, explore new repertoire and enjoy the clarinet’s extraordinary expressive range. Each day will bring a mixture of practical exercises, ensemble music-making and opportunities to share ideas, with individual guidance tailored to participants’ interests. There will also be opportunities to explore solo repertoire with an accompanist, discovering how familiar music can take on new life when played together. Above all, this is a chance to enjoy making music with others in a relaxed, encouraging and stimulating environment.

Who is it for?

This Open Level course welcomes clarinettists with a broad range of playing experience, from developing amateur musicians to more experienced players. You should be comfortable reading music in order to participate in ensemble work, but repertoire will be adapted to the abilities of the group. Enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to learn alongside others are the most important qualities. Solo playing is entirely optional, so participants can enjoy the course without any pressure to perform individually.

What to expect

Sessions will usually begin with warm-ups and breathing exercises before moving into ensemble music, technique and practical approaches to playing. Robert will provide ensemble pieces suited to the group, with some sight-reading as the music is introduced. You are welcome to bring solo repertoire of your own choice and, if you wish, share pieces you have worked on before or explore them with the class pianist. There may also be an opportunity to share ensemble repertoire towards the end of the week.
