The Heart of the Oboe Exploring Sound, Technique and Expression
Directed by Adrian Wilson
About the course
Discover new possibilities in your oboe playing with Adrian Wilson, Principal Oboe of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and of Ensemble 360. Drawing on his extensive experience as an orchestral and chamber musician, Adrian will help you develop greater freedom, confidence and individuality in your playing. Working with repertoire chosen by participants, the course offers opportunities to refine tone and phrasing, develop technical confidence, explore solo and orchestral music, prepare for auditions or improve reed-making skills. Individual coaching, demonstrations and shared discussion will provide fresh perspectives and practical ideas to take into your playing.
Who is it for?
Designed for experienced amateur oboists, music students and emerging professionals playing at approximately Grade 7 standard or above. Participants should read music confidently and be comfortable preparing repertoire independently. The course welcomes those wishing to refine established skills, tackle new challenges or explore the instrument in greater depth.
What to expect
Sessions will combine individual coaching with group participation, so everyone can learn through playing, listening and discussion. Adrian will explore sound production, breath control, articulation, phrasing, technical development and effective practice. Bring solo works, orchestral excerpts or audition repertoire; reed making and adjustment can also be covered. Piano accompaniment will be available for accompanied pieces. Please send details of the repertoire you would like to work on in advance so that sessions can reflect your interests and needs.
