Entertaining the Gershwins
Directed by Sarah Gabriel
About the course
We may think we know George and Ira Gershwin: the composer and lyricist brothers behind some of the twentieth century’s most enduring songs. But what made them the artists they became? What delighted, inspired and infuriated them—and which friends, rivals, heroes and villains shaped their work? Through songs, lyrics, letters, recordings, film and the recollections of those who knew them, we will rediscover the Gershwins in the lively context of their own time. We will look beyond the most familiar hits to explore beginnings, successes, flops, fragments, rediscoveries and ‘trunk songs’: the numbers that almost got away. Along the way, we will uncover unexpected influences, ask which works the brothers themselves valued most, and build a shared visual map of the people, ideas and connections surrounding their creative lives.
Who is it for?
For singers of any level who are curious about the Gershwins and their era, from enthusiastic beginners to experienced performers. Pianists are also warmly encouraged to join, particularly those who enjoy accompanying singers and exploring songs collaboratively. Curiosity and a willingness to share discoveries matter more than technical experience.
What to expect
Each day will combine singing, listening, discussion and exploration of contemporary sources. Participants may bring lesser-known songs, clips, poems, readings or other discoveries to share, and the group will sing selected repertoire together. The course will move broadly through the brothers’ creative lives—from beginnings and breakthrough hits to failures, unfinished works and rediscoveries—while remaining responsive to the interests and material participants bring. As the week develops, the group will create a detective-style map of timelines, relationships, influences, friendships and rivalries, culminating in a small, informal sharing of selected discoveries and songs on the final day.
