Stephen Montague

Stephen Montague is an award-winning composer, pianist, and conductor based in
London but tours world-wide. His work combines equal expertise in writing for
conventional ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Ballet
and BBC Symphony Chorus with extensive work at the other end of the spectrum in
the more experimental areas of contemporary music- a Horn Concerto, for example,
scored for klaxon horn soloist and an orchestra of vintage automobiles. His
philosophy as a composer living in the 21 st C resonates with Henry Cowell’s iconic
statement from the last century: “I want to live in the whole world of music, not just
one corner.”

Montague’s catalogue of works includes solo, chamber, orchestral, and choral
compositions, works for toy piano, various keyboard instruments, electronic music,
music theatre, and sound installations as well as concertos for traditional instruments
as well as unusual instruments like motorcycles. Recent commissions include the
BBC Proms, English National Opera, The Royal Festival Hall, Barbican Centre,
Warsaw Autumn, Huddersfield Festival, and the Sound Festival-Aberdeen.
As a performer he has worked with many giants of contemporary music including
John Cage, Morton Feldman, Terry Riley, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Maxwell
Davies, Birtwistle, Stockhausen, Kagel, and John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin). He has
played piano recitals, conducted orchestras and ensembles world-wide as well as
directing 18 John Cage- Musicircuses (with 150 to 400 performers) in the UK,
Europe, and North America.

In addition to his freelance work Montague is a Professor of Composition at Trinity
Laban Conservatory of Music & Dance, London and in 2018-19 was Visiting
Professor of Composition at Florida State University. This coming autumn he and
Alex Julyan will be Artists in Resident in Houston, Texas for a large multimedia
project.
